Thrombocytopenia is a common manifestation among patients with chronic liver disease. In the setting of advanced liver disease, thrombocytopenia may negatively impact patient care by interfering with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The development of thrombopoietin agonists has the potential to provide clinicians with new options to improve patient care. However, current guidelines provide limited guidance on the optimal approach to increase platelet counts in patients with chronic liver disease.

The introduction of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy represented a true break¬through in overcoming the genetic defects underlying cystic fibrosis (CF). Small-molecule therapy with a single agent, and a combination of that agent with a second complementary agent, has successfully improved meaningful clinical outcomes in patients with specific CF genotypes. This success has led to intensive research and development efforts to expand treatment options to broader populations of CF patients. As new agents become available, clinicians will need to make informed decisions about selecting appropriate therapy for individual CF patients.

Recently, modulators of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) have been introduced as new therapy options for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Initial clinical experience with these agents indicates that their administration can be challenging to manage, being associated with adverse reactions in some patients. Some patients also have difficulty maintaining adherence to dosing regimens required for CFTR modulators and regimens involving co-administration of other chronic CF therapies.

This educational Mini Module will outline practical, clinically applicable approaches for minimizing and managing adverse events associated with CFTR modulators and for optimizing adherence.

Activity Summary:
New pan-genotypic regimens continue to transform HCV management with more potent, more convenient, and safer regimens. These rapid changes require clinicians to become continually educated on the state-of-the-art approach to HCV management as well as safe and appropriate use of these newer regimens.

These Conversations in HCV will discuss the use of 8- or 12-week HCV regimens in treatment-naïve patients, HCV management issue in contemporary difficult-to-cure patients, and considerations in the setting of renal disease, HCC, and transplantation.

This certified CME/CNE Interactive Case Review will address epidemiologic trends using a case-based approach to discuss optimal HCV therapy options and management approaches/challenges for patients with these various conditions.

In the past decade, it has become increasingly clear that women and men with stable ischemic heart disease often present with different signs and symptoms. Some of these differences can reflect gender-based differences in disease pathophysiology and risks for clinical cardiovascular events, as well as the need for different diagnostic methods and treatment strategies.

These educational Mini Modules will outline the epidemiologic trends as well as the health and economic burden of SIHD in women. In addition, discussion will include gender-specific pathophysiologic factors in SIHD, diagnostic approaches, risk stratification, and management approaches in women with stable ischemic heart disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its progressive form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), are common causes of chronic liver disease with an increasing worldwide prevalence. The condition is associated with increased mortality related to cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and liver disease. No single treatment approach has proved universally applicable to the general population with NASH. Several promising drug therapies for NASH are in clinical trials and are anticipated to pave the way for new and more effective treatment options.
