Adolescents, HIV, and PrEP - Updated November 2021
Activity Summary:
The Simply Speaking HIV Prevention lecture series includes a curriculum that highlights the very latest clinical data utilizing a library of PowerPoint slide presentations developed and approved by key expert physicians and further reviewed and approved by the Planning Committee.
Adolescents are a key population in the HIV epidemic, accounting for approximately 1 in 5 new HIV infection in the United States. The expanded indication for PrEP in adolescents (≥35 kg) provides clinicians with an additional, effective tool to further reduce the risk of HIV transmission in this group. Once diagnosed, youth with HIV are the least likely out of any age group to be linked to care and achieve viral suppression once on ART. The program will cover the spectrum of developmental changes in adolescents including social, behavioral, physiological and biological aspects and the impact of an HIV positive status. Prevention programs, considerations for PrEP use, testing, treatment, and support services among adolescents are also included.
