Heart failure (HF) is a complex syndrome and a growing problem, in terms of both the number of patients affected, its associated clinical consequences and its implications for health care expenditure. HF is recognized as the ultimate pathway of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Importantly, rapid ageing of the population means that the incidence of HF shall increase further in the coming years. Preventing the development of this condition in the population at large, in order to reduce hospital readmission rates, its other clinical sequelae and its economic consequences, is a key issue in modern medicine. Appropriate HF treatment can have the greatest influence on prolonging patients' lives in the coming year. Typically, HF is a common and insidious disease with substantial associated morbidity and mortality burden worldwide. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and fatal lung disease of multifactorial etiology. Currently, therapies for treating pulmonary hypertension have been used alone and in combination to demonstrate improvements in quality of life and hemodynamic parameters as well as in slowing disease progression; however, beneficial effects on survival are limited. Pulmonary Hypertension Due to Interstitial Lung Disease (PH-ILD) represents a complex condition which now has a recently approved inhaled therapy to improve exercise ability. In the past decade, it has become increasingly clear that women and men with stable ischemic heart disease often present with different signs and symptoms. Some of these differences can reflect gender-based differences in disease pathophysiology and risks for clinical cardiovascular events, as well as the need for different diagnostic methods and treatment strategies.

These educational Mini Modules will outline the epidemiologic trends as well as the health and economic burden of SIHD in women. In addition, discussion will include gender-specific pathophysiologic factors in SIHD, diagnostic approaches, risk stratification, and management approaches in women with stable ischemic heart disease.
